Storytelling: Why it's important and what could be holding you back

For three decades, I’ve studied one question: Why do some companies form bonds with customers that last a lifetime, while others fade into noise?
The answer is clear. The most successful brands don’t win with more features, bigger budgets, or louder ads. They win with storytelling.
When a brand shares its story with honesty and clarity, it creates connection. It communicates value, purpose, and uniqueness in a way that facts alone never can.
What’s holding you back?
Having a good story is the first part of branding when it comes to PR and marketing. Your product or service will only get you so far; it’s the STORY that keeps your customers loyal and connected.
Not having a clear origin story holds often companies back because they don’t think about having one or, on the flip side, they do have one and they don’t consider refining it over time.
You should constantly be telling your story. Through social media, through blog posts, through newsletters. Your customers want to know about the person behind the brand and what got you to where you are today. They want to feel connected to you on a personal level, building brand loyalty and conversion.
People only hear about your business based on what others are talking about…and it’s not just the product or service they’re talking about. It’s the story behind the brand that they’re connected to. It’s the impact your brand has made on their lives that keeps the conversation going. Customers don’t retell product specs—they retell stories. A good story is inherently shareable, especially when it aligns with the values and identities of your audience.
Business owners also need to tell the story about their growth. The story is about what you’ve accomplished to get toward your goal. What’s holding you back could be that you’re focusing on what you’ve overcome, rather than the origin of what brought you to own and run this business. Focusing on your obstacles doesn’t yield the overall quick conversion when you’re trying to get your product or service understood.
What are you trying to get your customers to feel?
Authentic storytelling is at the root of all great businesses.
It builds trust & credibility. Consumers are more skeptical than ever. Authentic stories—especially those rooted in real experiences, challenges, and missions—create transparency. People trust people, not brands. Stories humanize your business.
Authentic stories create an emotional connection. Decisions are often emotional before they are rational. A powerful story activates empathy and makes your audience feel something. Customers who feel connected are more likely to become loyal, repeat buyers.
Telling your story in your own words differentiates you from the competition. Anyone can copy your product, but they can’t copy your unique journey, values, or reason for existing. Your story is your brand's DNA—it's what sets you apart in a crowded market.
People remember stories far more than they remember data or slogans. Authentic storytelling increases time spent with your brand and boosts shares, word-of-mouth, and social proof.
The power of authenticity is that your connection to your clients can be seen and felt virtually. Your customers should know your story and why you do what you do.
Some tips for authentic storytelling:
Start with your “Why”
Be vulnerable and honest
Show people, not just products
Let customers tell the story
Make it consistent across platforms
